As a devoted fan of the Nikki series, I have created birthday illustrations for her every year. This summer, learning that Paper Games was co-hosting a creative design competition with GGAC—with outstanding creators having a chance to secure a job offer—I immediately signed up for the animation category. I spent a month and a half creating and submitting my first-ever animated piece for Nikki。

Although my submission did not win an award in the GGAC Global Game Art Contest, the entire creative process was immensely valuable to my growth as an animator and visual storyteller. Upon reviewing my animation, Fantasy Music Box, and comparing it to the award-winning entry The Gift of the Stars, I clearly identified key areas where my work fell short. it also received thousands of likes and views, with many users expressing appreciation for my art style—an immensely encouraging response.

The animation was inspired by the multiplayer system in Infinity Nikki Version 1.5. I envisioned a parallel world where Nikki, having failed a quest, becomes trapped in a forgotten music box, dancing day after day, waiting to be seen and awakened. Set in the Marcel’s Boutique of Miracle Mirror, the story carries a subtle melancholy and fairy-tale ambiance.
In particular, my camera movements and storyboard transitions appeared conservative and lacked innovative visual storytelling techniques. For example, in one crucial scene, I opted for simple static shots rather than dynamic camera transitions or zoom-ins, which diminished the overall emotional impact and visual appeal of the narrative.
Reflecting on the judges’ feedback for the winning entry, which highlighted genuine emotional resonance and creative storyboard transitions, I realized how essential it is to deepen my exploration of expressive camera techniques, dynamic transitions, and simplified but evocative character designs.

Furthermore, I’ll prioritize simplifying my character designs by practicing clearer, more cohesive visual styles. This approach will allow the audience to better connect emotionally with the characters and follow the narrative more intuitively.

With these insights in mind, my immediate goal is to actively refine my animation storytelling skills, focusing particularly on camera movements, creative transitions, and effective narrative pacing. I plan to undertake weekly storyboard exercises that deliberately incorporate dynamic camera angles and smoother transitions between emotional beats, to enhance the emotional resonance and visual clarity of my animations.
