In the past few weeks, I have been assisting a second-year animation student with their project, which revolves around themes of memory, nostalgia, and emotional connection. The student is currently finalizing their animatic while beginning character design, test animation, and background concepts.
My primary contribution was in the area of character design, particularly in developing a younger version of their protagonist.

one of the first tasks I was assigned was to help refine the visual identity of a key character. The student provided references and descriptions indicating that the story required a balance between realism and sentimentality. They also wanted an experimental approach for the limbo/empty space scenes. Given these elements, I worked on designing a childhood version of the character, ensuring consistency with their adult counterpart while capturing the nostalgic, soft, and slightly melancholic tone of the film.
The three sketches I created explored different outfits and silhouettes, helping the student decide on the best representation of their protagonist’s early years
.Additionally, I contributed to the final character turnaround sheet, defining color palettes and key facial expressions. The goal was to maintain a cohesive visual identity while also allowing the character’s evolution to be subtly reflected in their design.

I also provided insights on how to enhance the film’s emotional weight through visual storytelling. Since the student wanted a “slightly realistic/emotional/sentimental” tone, I suggested emphasizing the contrast between past memories and the present by using different color schemes, lighting effects, and camera movements. For the limbo/empty space scenes, I proposed an experimental approach using surreal imagery and unconventional animation techniques to heighten the sense of disconnection.Personal ReflectionThis experience reinforced my appreciation for collaborative storytelling in animation.
As an artist, translating emotions into character design requires a deep understanding of narrative themes and visual language. Working with the second-year student allowed me to refine my skills in character development while also practicing constructive brainstorming and feedback. It was fulfilling to see my designs help shape their vision, and I am eager to witness how the final animation unfolds.
