For this project, I focused on creating a chilling and atmospheric scene where a vampire emerges in a haunted room. The challenge was to convey suspense and fear through animation while adhering to the requirement that only one character could be animated. This limitation led to a creative solution—using the painting’s character as the primary source of reaction, inspired by the moving portraits in Harry Potter

The inspiration came from classic horror aesthetics, particularly Nosferatu (1922), known for its eerie, slow-paced movements and unnatural body language. I wanted to capture that unsettling, creeping horror, making the vampire’s actions feel almost hypnotic. Instead of exaggerated, aggressive motions, the vampire moves with calculated slowness, exuding an eerie presence。

The painting concept draws on gothic horror tropes—oil-painted figures coming to life in fear. Originally, I considered having the entire frame shake to express terror, but I later decided that the woman inside the painting should react instead. Her eyes widening, her posture shifting, and her expression turning to horror as the vampire approaches make the fear more personal and immersive.

Since only one character could be animated, I focused on how the oil painting woman reacts to the vampire. When the vampire turns its gaze toward the painting, the woman’s face shifts from calm to terror, mimicking a frozen scream. This contrast highlights the vampire’s presence without excessive motion. To add variety, I planned subtle animation for the vampire’s transformation. The character circles the room before morphing into a bat, with his silhouette distorting before vanishing. The finale sees the vampire caught in the sunlight, dissipating into nothingness—a poetic nod to traditional vampire lore.

One challenge was ensuring the vampire’s movements felt unnerving without excessive animation. By carefully timing his approach and utilizing contrast in movement speed, I created a stronger sense of dread. Another challenge was making the woman’s reaction feel natural while keeping the animation economical. Using reference footage and testing different expressions helped refine the impact.
